Yesterday was the 3rd anniversary of the infamous Plaza Hotel fire. This fire left a gap in Victoria’s charming heritage cityscape and remains to this day a vacant lot, boarded up from view.

D Platoon was on night shift when the call came in during the early hours of the morning. It was evident that this would be an incident that would take days to suppress. The fire took many days to fully extinguish and every Platoon had was required to pitch in.

This @flir footage is from our drone which helps fire crews get a better vantage point for complex fires like this. The Victoria Fire Department has dedicated drone Pilots that are required to complete intensive training that incorporates controls, flight regs and fire ground operations. This tool will no doubt become an essential tool as our city grows vertically.

We train to keep our skills sharp and fresh in our minds. There could not have been a better day to be conducting an Aerial Apparatus (Ladder Truck) drills. Not even two hours before the near fatal high rise fire two days ago, B Platoon was training hard with Ladder 1 and Engine 21 which are both equipped with aerial ladders.

At approximately 1130hrs on April 29th the entire Battalion was dispatched to reports of a fire in a High-rise apartment building at 1147 View Street. On scene was Battalion 1, Engine 1, Rescue 1, Ladder 1, Engine 2 and Engine 3.

With the occupant trapped on his 10th floor balcony and heavy smoke pouring from the open sliding door, Engine 1 crew proceeded to the 10th as first in attack crew, while the crew from Ladder 1 similtainiously began aerial rescue operations. Within minutes the occupant who suffered severe burns and smoke related injuries, was plucked from the balcony by Firefighters Huva and Baker. While the rescue was underway, the Engine 1 crew had made their way to the fire floor, deployed a smoke curtain (a tool that acts as part of a smoke control system and helps prevent excess smoke entering another zone, in this case the stairwell being used for evacuation) and began attacking the fire.

Support from Engine 3, Engine 2, Rescue 1 made the incident smooth and efficient. Air bottles, hand tools and RIT Equipment had to be walked up 10 floors. EVERYBODY worked hard for this successful outcome and
although it was a complex incident, B platoon had the fire under control, the occupant rescued and prevented the spread of the blaze within minutes.

Our thoughts are with the sole occupant of the apartment who remains in critical condition. Thanks to other tenants closing their doors the fire was contained to a single unit and it remains remarkable that no one else was injured.

There’s certain things we get asked about the most. Usually, when asked if we save cats from trees, we laugh and give an answer like “I’ve never seen a Cat skeleton in a tree…they typically come down on their own when they are hungry enough.”

But every now and then we are needed to save the day. Three days ago, members of D Platoon got to tick this one off the list. Using the Aerial Ladder on Engine 21, and supported by his Engine crew, Firefighter Stelck had the honour of plucking poor Whiskers from the branches 3 stories up.

With beach fire season coming up quickly, the Vict

With beach fire season coming up quickly, the Victoria Fire Department is excited to receive delivery of our first Aerial Beach Fire Unit.

This cutting edge Apparatus is capable of locating beach fires from the air and also of landing in water to extinguish fires burning on the beaches of our lovely city.
.
H1 will be equipped with the ability to draft water straight from the ocean and pump it through the onboard Aircraft Mounted Nozzle System (AMNS) to knock down hard to reach fires on our foreshore.

We currently have Firefighters from each Platoon that are undergoing the comprehensive pilot program. We hope to be in the air by this summer.
